My friend's daughter who just graduated from high school posted a facebook status message that read:
"Alright!!!!!! [business name] called this evening and said they REALLY missed seeing [H's] smiling face at work today!!!!! They said she did everything that was asked of her yesterday and faster than they ever imagined!!! She helped out on spread sheets, helped with accounts payable/receivable, filed, returned emails, stamped invoices, made 500+ copies, ect..ect..They were most impressed with her proficient Math skills!!! She was doing deductions in her head while they were checking behind her with a calculator...She was 100% everytime! Guess she will be at it next week! <PROUD MOMMA & DADDY>"
I hit the "like" button immediately, as there is nothing better than a proud momma and daddy, but then something made my skin crawl. A comment from one of 'momma's' friends which read:
"Did they say how pretty she was? Should have!"
Now I'm not saying that her daughter isn't the prettiest little thing you've ever seen, BUT...when Mom just listed all the SMART attributes of her child why in the world would another woman want to know if the possible employer thought she was 'pretty'? What in the world does that have to do with it? Frankly, if the employer had even suggested that having her around sure did purty up the place, I would question if I wanted my daughter to work there. REALLY? What is it about today's WOMEN that they are still so hung up on being PRETTY? PRETTY comes from within, through hard work, self awareness and taking care. Pretty comes from having the strength to go out into a world that is so incredibly judgemental that it doesn't care so much about your awards, education or experience but rather how f'ing PRETTY YOU ARE!!!
Stop the madness LADIES!!! Instill in your daughters and the women around you that they are more than cattle. Celebrate their accomplishments. DO NOT judge them for choosing to be their own person. Your daughters desever better than that. They deserve to have you lift them up as 1st class citizens in this great United States rather than encouraging them to make sure they are pretty enough to land a husband. God forbid our daughters might be known for something other than their looks.
That is all.
