My name is Abigail Darlington and this is my blog about my number one
passion in life: music. I began singing in the chorus when I was 6, and
didn't stop until I graduated from Wando High School a few years ago.
Being actively involved in creating music was one of the best learning
experiences for a kid like me. It tuned my ear to appreciate and
understand the components that make up good music - like tone, balance,
etc. To me, rock music is and always will be true to those aesthetics. I
think there's something magical created in that
drum-bass-vocals-electric-guitar relationship that no synthesized
machine can match.
Coming from a long line of Charleston
natives, I've developed a strong affinity for this little place we call
the Lowcountry. I'm a rising junior at the College of Charleston where
I'm majoring in Communications. I couldn't love the College more.
Hearing my friends and classmates talk about how lucky they are to go to
school here never gets old, and I'm always proud to interject that I
was also raised here.
Seeing live music is my ultimate favorite
thing to do. My boyfriend always says you don't know a band until you
see them, which I think is true. I wish more than anything I could
have truly known bands like the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Talking
Heads, The Doors, and The Beatles like the generation before me did. I
guess that mystery fuels some of my fascination.
If I had to
narrow it down to a list, I guess these would be my favorite
bands/artists: Allman Brothers Band The Band Band of Horses The Beatles Bob
Dylan CCR Doobie Brothers The Disco Biscuits Fleetwood Mac George
Harrison Grateful Dead Janis Joplin Keller Williams Led
Zeppelin Marshall Tucker Band Pink Floyd Railroad Earth The
String Cheese Incident Talking Heads Tea Leaf Green Tom Petty Umphrey's
Mcgee Widespread Panic Yonder Mountain String Band
I'm so
excited to have this blog where I'll be discussing some of those bands,
some new - some old - and all of my live experiences along the way.
Thank you for checking it out!
I've been obsessing over Janis Joplin ever since I read Pearl, a Janis Joplin biography I picked up this summer. I just love how much she stunned and shocked the rock music scene at that time in ways it had never been before. She was one of the first women to really look at the industry in the face and say "this is who I am." Anyway, turns out I love her more than I thought - this video of her singing "Cry Baby" can explain why better than I can. This is her on tour with Grateful Dead in Canada circa 1970.
